El conocimiento humano, a través del tiempo, busca volverse más completo. Esto se aplica plenamente al conocimiento del pasado histórico. Hasta mediados del siglo XIX, en la mente europea, la historia se iniciaba con la llegada de los judíos a Palestina y con la época homérica. Geográficamente el espacio histórico se limitaba a Eurasia, y ni aun a toda esta región. Durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, en el espacio y el tiempo de la historia, entraron el antiguo Egipto, Sumer y Akkad, los hititas y los hurritas, el mundo minoico y micénico, la China antigua y Harappa, los elamitas y los khmeres de Angkor.
Finalmente, en las últimas décadas una parte completa e integral de la historia humana se completó con la historia de América precolombina, sobre todo con la de Mesoamérica.
