Gracias a los aportes de Yuri Knórozov, se conoce que se trata de un sistema de escritura mixto LOGOSILÁBICO en el que se pueden distinguir básicamente dos tipos de signos: LOGOGRAMAS, que representan una palabra entera, tienen valor fonético y semántico (i.e. lectura y sentido), y SILABOGRAMAS, combinación de consonante-vocal que representan un signo con solo valor fonético (i.e. solo lectura). Se trata del concepto de Semiótica Étnica, base de su teoría de la comunicación. El libro está dividido en dos partes. La primera contiene un estudio historiográfico que explica las posturas de Knórosov en relación a la Semiótica Étnica.
