De las diferentes disciplinas o especialidades científicas que contribuyen a dichos estudios, la epigrafía es precisamente la que investiga las formas de lectura y escritura de dichas sociedades en los restos materiales dejados en inscripciones.
Al considerar la dimensión de los estudios históricos y arqueológicos del área maya vemos que, como fue el caso de numerosas otras culturas del mundo y la historia antigua, en principio fueron malentendidas y solo gradualmente fue posible identificar sus particularidades únicas. Situaciones que actualmente pueden parecer absurdas, como los intentos de vincular la cultura maya prehispánica con el antiguo Egipto, o incluso la incapacidad de identificar los estilos tan diferentes de las culturas mesoamericanas, eran parte de las discusiones académicas del Siglo XIX y XX, siendo que hasta la fecha suponen polémicas cuando se tratan detalles específicos.
Actualmente, sin embargo, puede decirse, con cierta reserva, que cerca del 90% de la escritura maya prehispánica puede traducirse y reproducirse de manera fidedigna. Desde el punto de vista de los estudios históricos y arqueológicos dichos resultados solo fueron factibles por una plataforma internacional de académicos y eruditos de diferentes naciones entre las cuales podemos mencionar a Rusia, Estados Unidos, Inglaterra, Francia, España, Alemania y por supuesto México.
En el curso de los siguientes capítulos se abordará una parte de la historia del área maya, para entender que el desciframiento de la escritura maya prehispánica supuso un redescubrimiento de la historia cultural de Mesoamérica, puesto que en última instancia solo a través de dichos registros fue posible obtener cronologías, fechar eventos y establecer las zonas de influencia entre las distintas regiones.

Es una realidad tangible que la materialidad nos otorga evidencias sobre la existencia de generadores de sonidos en toda Mesoamérica, incluyendo al Área Maya. En los últimos años, una nueva oleada de investigadores ha centrado sus estudios en el reconocimiento, clasificación, y registro tanto morfológico como acústico de los instrumentos musicales prehispánicos en pos de un conocimiento más a fondo sobre la función de dichos artefactos como parte de los distintos entramados sonoros que pudieron reproducirse en diversos contextos a lo largo y ancho del territorio mesoamericano (Adje 2005, Stöckli 2005, Rodens 2007, Zalaquett 2013, Sánchez 2016).
En diferentes proyectos de excavación así como entre las colecciones privadas obtenidas a través de saqueos que, ya sea por donación voluntaria o a través de la expropiación por parte de las autoridades gubernamentales correspondientes, han llegado a los acervos nacionales, se registran materiales principalmente cerámicos (en menor medida óseos, malacológicos y metálicos en etapas muy tardías) que corresponden a instrumentos musicales de percusión, idiófonos (maracas y cascabeles) y aerófonos que varían entre flautas, ocarinas, silbatos y trompetas entre otros.

Desde que el científico ruso Yuri Valentinovich Knórosov descifró la escritura jeroglífica maya para el año 1952, la epigrafía ha avanzado rápidamente hasta convertirse hoy en día en una especialización que ha tenido aportes de investigadores en todo el mundo. Gracias a los aportes de Yuri Knórozov, se conoce que se trata de un sistema de escritura mixto LOGOSILÁBICO en el que se pueden distinguir básicamente dos tipos de signos: LOGOGRAMAS, que representan una palabra entera, tienen valor fonético y semántico (i.e. lectura y sentido), y SILABOGRAMAS, combinación de consonante-vocal que representan un signo con solo valor fonético (i.e. solo lectura).
A partir de ello, varios son los proyectos de registro de inscripciones jeroglíficas que se han emprendido, siendo el más importante el del año de 1966 por un grupo de investigadores, entre ellos; Dra. Tatiana Proskouriakova, Dr. Ignacio Bernal, Dr. Michael D. Coe, Dr. Gordon F. Ekholm, Dr. Luis Luján Muñoz, Dr. Floyd Lounsbury y el Dr. Gordon R. Willey, quienes empezaron a planear el proyecto del corpus de Inscripciones Jeroglíficas Mayas.

El libro “La semiótica étnica de Yuri Knórosov” revela un aspecto poco conocido de los trabajos del gran científico ruso descifrador de la escritura jeroglífica maya. Se trata del concepto de Semiótica Étnica, base de su teoría de la comunicación. El libro está dividido en dos partes. La primera contiene un estudio historiográfico que explica las posturas de Knórosov en relación a la Semiótica Étnica. La segunda parte presenta por vez primera la traducción al español de los trabajos en donde Knórosov desarrolla su teoría de la comunicación. Sobre lo mismo están incluidos dos textos de colegas de Knórosov que en su momento dieron a conocer la visión del genio ruso.
Los autores son especialistas en epigrafía maya y manejan el método original de Knórosov. La Dra. Galina Ershova fue alumna de Yuri Knórosov, actualmente es Directora del Centro de Estudios Mesoamericanos de Moscú “Yuri Knórosov” de la Universidad Estatal Rusa de Humanidades y directora del CEMYK en Guatemala. El Dr. Alejandro Sheseña es investigador de tiempo completo en la Facultad de Humanidades de la Universidad de Ciencias y Artes de Chiapas.

En esta publicación se presentan los materiales de la primera fase de investigación del Proyecto de Documentación Gráfica Casa de Las Golondrinas dirigido por la Dra. Galina Ershova de la Universidad Estatal de Rusia de Humanidades y por la Ma. Patricia Rivera Castillo de la Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, efectuado a partir del 1 de abril del año 2018.
El sitio Casa de Las Golondrinas localizado en el Valle de Antigua Guatemala, es considerado como uno de los sitios más ricos y con más representación de arte rupestre en el altiplano guatemalteco. Está formado por escarpas o paneles de roca ígnea (principalmente basalto y andesita) de aproximadamente 650 m de largo en dirección este-oeste y con áreas que presentan más de 35 m de alto. Posee pinturas que están plasmadas tanto al pie del peñasco como en segmentos medios y superiores de las escarpas, generalmente en superficies lisas.

El Valle de Almolonga posee uno de los sitios con arte rupestre más grandes y complejos del altiplano guatemalteco, denominado como La Casa de Las Golondrinas, este sitio se sitúa en las cercanías de Antigua Guatemala, en el departamento de Sacatepéquez, entre los municipios de San Miguel Dueñas y Ciudad Vieja, dentro del casco de la finca privada de café San Rafael Urías en las coordenadas latitud 14.526400/ 14°31’34.39” N, longitud - 90.782147/ 90°46’55.7” W.
El sitio La Casa de Las Golondrinas es considerado como uno de los más ricos y con más representación de arte rupestre del altiplano guatemalteco, enmarcado entre los volcanes de Agua al este y Acatenango y Fuego al oeste, conformado por escarpas o paneles de roca ígnea (principalmente basalto y andesita) de aproximadamente 650 m de largo en dirección este-oeste y con áreas que presentan más de 35 m de alto. Posee pinturas que están plasmadas en color rojo, tanto al pie del peñasco como en segmentos medios y superiores de las escarpas, generalmente en superficies lisas.
